Both DNA and L’Alsace have tweeted me with the news that a poll due in le Parisien tomorrow shows Marine Le Pen, leader of the far right Front national (FN), ahead at 23% of both the current president, Nicolas Sarkozy, and current General Secretary of the Parti Socialiste (PS), Martine Aubrey, who both have 21% in the first round for the elections for the President due in 2012. This is the first time a poll has shown the leader of the FN qualifying for the run-off second round of the elections and draws parallels with the elections for President of France in 2002 when PS candidate Lionel Jospin came in third place leaving the father of Marine and then leader of the FN, Jean-Marie Le Pen, to contest the second round of elections for president with Jacques Chirac. This is an appalling prospect but with a year to go hopefully something which will spur on the PS and Sarkozy’s party, the UMP, to do better and prevent the FN getting into the second round.
All the way with DSK
The same poll shows that if the current head of the IMF and former Finance Minister, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, is the PS candidate for President he would beat the current president 28%-23% with the FN in third place with 18% support.
