Racist and hate crimes in Strasbourg – Enough

After 14 racist attacks in Strasbourg this year the Mayor of Strasbourg has said enough is enough and he’s right.  The Mayor of Strasbourg, Roland Ries said, “Enough” as he launched an online campaign against the attacks which this year include:

➢ Tags “anti-minaret” on the home of Roland Ries, Mayor of Strasbourg, in the night 9 to 10 January 2010,
➢ Tags “anti-minaret” on the vehicle of Fouad Douai, director of the Great Mosque of Strasbourg, in the night 11 to 12 January 2010,
➢ Desecration of Jewish cemetery, January 27, 2010,
➢ Swastikas and inscriptions in the stairwell of a building in the Rue de Rome, 3 March 2010,
➢ assault of a young Jewish man at the tram station “Homme de Fer”, April 30, 2010,
➢ Protestant Church Hautepierre burned May 20, 2010,
➢ Altar ransacked and Bible torn in a Church burned May 28, 2010,
➢ desecration of Muslim graves in the cemetery north of Strasbourg, the night of 28 to 29 June 2010,
➢ Desecration of graves in the cemetery of Wolfisheim, July 21, 2010
➢ racist tags on the truck to a manager of a company distributing halal meat, in the night of 10 to 11 September 2010,
➢ Attack on Faruk Gunalty, Director, Odyssey Theatre, in the night of 20 to 21 September 2010
➢ desecration of Muslim graves in the cemetery south of Strasbourg, 24 September 2010,
➢ tags on the homes of Israel Nisand, Councillor Strasbourg and community advisor, the night of 2 to 3 October 2010.

The Mayor is asking the people o Strasbourg to sign a petition against these acts saying they have no place in Strasbourg.  Sign up for the Facebook page in support and read more about this here and here.

I have signed and would ask all Strasbourg based readers to sign also .  Hate crimes have no place in our city.  But don’t just sign against hate crime, sign to support solidarity between all the residents of Strasbourg regardless of the colour of their skin, their creed, their gender, ability, sexual orientation or any other difference, we are all citizens of Strasbourg, we are all one.  Stop the attacks now.
